Overview

Context

Alberta Health has a responsibility to facilitate and expand the electronic exchange of information between clinical systems of healthcare stakeholders in Alberta. In response to the health modernization initiative, stakeholder needs and issues were identified with diagnostic orders. Alberta Heath plans to implement a province-wide eOrdering system that would electronically send laboratory orders from EMRs to the provincial Connect Care lab information system.

The purpose of the Lab eOrdering Project is to design and plan for the implementation of a fully integrated closed-loop eOrdering solution, with an immediate focus on the quick implementation of a Lab eOrdering Minimum Viable Product (MVP). The Lab eOrdering MVP will enable community providers to electronically order a base set of frequently used lab tests through their EMR to the Connect Care provincial laboratory system (Beaker) hosted by Alberta Health Services (AHS). The Lab eOrdering MVP will not include all the full closed-loop functionality and complete lab order catalogue, as those will be implemented in later phases post MVP implementation via planned incremental deployments.

Scope

The scope of the Alberta eOrder Laboratory FHIR Messaging Specification is to enable EMRs to send an electronic order to the Connect Care provincial laboratory system. Specifically this specification supports EMRs to send a new lab request, cancel a lab request, and update an existing lab request.
